ADVICE FOR THE CONCERNED STUDENTS

Researching

When you begin to look at this question you must investigate two different aspects of your school site

- the built environment (the buildings, what they represent in terms of education history, architecture, social history and their place in the community life around them) and

- the natural environment (the open space, now in amongst medium density housing, the old trees and their value to the environment, the playing fields which have been developed over many years and are now used by the community).

Then you need to think about what is intended to replace your school. Here is a plan of your school as it looks now. Have a good look at the proposed plan. What are the implications of the loss of the buildings and of the open space, the creation of a walled housing estate and the creation of a different pattern of traffic amongst other issues? Discuss these issues together.

You then have to investigate the other times when challenges have been made to developers. Allocate an event to each person in your group.

Have a very good look at the past events through accessing information on them in the Resources list.

Preparation

After you have completed your initial research you will need to put a draft report together to share with the rest of your group. Have a look at these guidelines for draft reports to help you write your report.

Submission

You will then need to prepare a report for written submission to the Court and for assessment. You will need a copy for your teacher and a copy for the Court group. Have a look at one guideline as to how to prepare a report here but remember that this is much more detailed than you will need. It does, however, give you some very good ideas.

Presentation

The slide of a PowerPoint presentation may be accessed here for you to use. When you open it go to File, go Save As and save it, then you can copy as many slides as you want. Advice on how to develop a PowerPoint presentation can be accessed here if you need it. Advice on what to do and what not to do when presenting a PowerPoint presentation can be accessed here. Your presentation should be no more than 10 slides as you only have 4-5 minutes for presentation.
