Assignment Number 2

  Date put on Website – 1st May, 2004

  ‘The Tour de France'

(The cycling race to end all cycling races!)

•  On a map of France mark on the route taken by the competitors in this year's race. This route could vary from year to year so you must be sure to use the correct year (2004). Mark on the map the starting point as well as the finishing point (which is always Paris). Make sure that you label the names of the neighbouring countries, remembering to print all information on your map.

  You will loose marks if you do not remember to include all the essential features of a map (look back in your notes and see what these essential features are or ask me to refresh your memory. (10 marks)  

•  In no more than 3 types pages, give a brief history of the race. Remember to use your own words . You may like to include a time line. (20 marks)  

•  What is the significance of the different coloured jerseys that are awarded to competitors during the running of the race? Draw a picture of each different coloured jersey and say what it represents.(10 marks)  

•  Construct a table showing a list of winners of the Tour de France from 1994 to 2004 (inclusive). Include in your table details of the country of origin of each of the winners. You could also include the sponsor or team name if you can find this information out. (10 marks)

  •  What controversy has ‘tainted' (or spoilt) the Tour de France race over the last few years? Give details of this controversy in no more than 1 page. (10 marks)

  •  In 2004 what was the value of the prize money that the winner of the race received? What other amounts of prize money are awarded? What do you think is the effect on the top riders of being placed in the Tour de France? [clue: their earnings from different sources](10 marks)

  •  An appendix of newspaper or magazine articles (at least 4) must be included at the back of your assignment.

  •  Bibliography – this time you must go back to the work we did on how to reference material and how to construct a bibliography. This is now a very important part of this assignment as the marks to be awarded indicate. Remember to always keep a note of any references that you use as you go, especially websites. (20 marks)

  •  Presentation. Each question should be begun on a new page. You should include a Table of Contents and a Title Page, and all pages should be carefully numbered. You should submit your assignment in a manilla folder with your name, and my name, neatly printed on the front. (10 marks)

  The race will be shown on SBS TV. Watching this occasionally could provide you with some valuable background information.

You should also ask your parents to keep any articles about the race if they happen to read, or see, anything about it. 

Some library research periods will be arranged.
